Exeter Cruise to Quito
The awards committee of the Exeter trustees seeks nominations on a rolling basis for the Academy's two highest alumni/ae honors, the Founder's Day Award and the John Phillips Award. The Founder's Day Award is given to an alumnus, alumna, faculty emeritus or emerita, retired staff member, parent or friend who has demonstrated exceptional service to the Academy. The service must be extraordinary, beyond what is regularly contributed by others doing similar service, and the nominee must still be living at the time of nomination. Duration of service may be of any length, but should perhaps be of five years or more. The recipient may receive the award only once and should not have previously received the John Phillips Award. The John Phillips Award is given to an alumnus or alumna of the Academy, still living at the time of nomination, whose life demonstrates John Phillips' ideal of goodness and knowledge united in noble character and usefulness to mankind. The nominee should have contributed significantly to the welfare of community, country or humanity, beyond any volunteer service to the Academy. Nomination letters should document with specifics how the nominee meets each award criterion. Supporting documents, news articles or other materials are particularly helpful for the John Phillips Award. Nomination letters should be addressed to Harold Brown '74, director of alumni/ae affairs, Phillips Exeter Academy, 20 Main Street, Exeter, NH 03833, hbrown@exeter.edu.
"I volunteer for Exeter because I believe what Exeter does is extraordinarily important. The Academy exposes young people to an incredible variety of experiences, ideas and people at a time in their lives when they are most open, understanding and curious. Exeter tests their capabilities to the fullest, and teaches them just how much they can achieve. What better definition of 'education' is there? If Exeter didn't exist, it would need to be invented. "I couldn't begin to tell Exeter how to teach, but I'm confident that as a volunteer, I can help generate resources that Exeter will use well. I want the Academy to be able to say, 'We can tackle that, because it's the right thing to do,' rather than limit its vision because of a lack of resources. "As alums, we've set world-class dollar records for the Annual Giving Fund; the next clear milestone is a world-class level of alumni/ae participation. I'd like to see us reach 60 percent, and that's a goal everyone can help achieve." - Ross Elkin '78 Class agent and national alumni/ae chair of the Exeter Annual Giving Fund; former class reunion volunteer; former secretary and elected director of the General Alumni/ae Association; recipient of the 1996 President's Award. |
