Phillips
Church
Click here for information on the Phillips Church renovation project Phillips Church is an interdenominational, interfaith church composed of students, faculty, staff, townspeople, and their families. Its purpose is varied: It hopes to provide an opportunity for members of the community to celebrate the Divine in a manner which is familiar to them; it encourages each member of the Academy community to seek a deeper understanding of his or her own tradition; and it hopes to foster in every person a deeper experience of the religious dimension of his or her daily life. The building was erected in 1897 and serves as the center of worship for the Academy and as the school's concert hall. The ministry sponsors services almost daily in which students are encouraged, but not required, to take part. They include the 12 noon Sunday Protestant services; Tuesday evening prayer at 9:30; and Thursday morning meditation at 9:50, usually led by a different faculty member; Islamic Society prayers beginning at 12:35 on Fridays; and Vipassana (Insight) Meditation beginning at 8 p.m. on Fridays. Both Friday activities are held in the Wicks Room, which is upstairs in the church. The Jewish Student Organization celebrates the Sabbath on Fridays at the dinner hour in the Seabrooke Room of the Elm Street Dining Hall. Christian Fellowship, a student-run organization, is supported by a member of the Academy community. It meets on Sundays at 6:30 in Phillips Church, and sponsors a Bible study and other activities. Activities of the Hindu Society are scheduled on a term by term basis, and include bringing speakers to campus and trips for worship and attending lectures in Boston. The ministry is shared by ordained school minister Rev. Robert Thompson and members of the religion department. All who are involved in the ministry are available for counseling.
