Beyond the Classroom

Athletics

The Exeter campus features a complex of athletic facilities that accommodate a wide range of sports. Facilities include five basketball courts, two swimming pools, 15 squash courts, and a well-equipped weight training room. Also available are a 1/10-mile indoor track, a dance studio, and a wrestling room. You have access as well to over 300 acres of school grounds for outdoor sports. Among outdoor facilities are a 400-meter all-weather track, 23 clay and all-weather tennis courts, cross-country trails, five baseball and softball diamonds, and a number of fields for football, field hockey, lacrosse, and soccer.

A summer student from a Navajo reservation in Arizona said, "Where I come from squash is a noun or a verb, not a sport." At Exeter he was able to try sports he had never seen played before and to enjoy the camaraderie of competing on a team. Athletics is an important part of the summer experience that enables you to meet people outside your dorms and classes. We offer more than 15 different sports in two sessions, allowing you to sign up for two sports in the course of the summer. Physical education classes meet four times a week in the afternoon and are required for all residential students.

In many sports, we group students by skill level. This approach allows beginners to learn together and more advanced players to play against each other. You have regular opportunities to compete against teams organized among players in your sport. Our physical education teachers are professionals, many of whom teach at Exeter during the year. They provide expert instruction in their sports along with encouragement and support. We urge all students to take advantage of the opportunity to try a new sport during summer school.

In recent years, we offered classes in the following sports in the Summer School:

Aerobics Basketball Beginning Golf Crew
Field Hockey Lacrosse Power Walking Self Defense
Soccer Softball Squash Swimming
Tennis Track and Field Ultimate Frisbee Volleyball
Water Polo Weight Training Yoga

The ACCESS EXETER daily schedule is similar to the UPPER SCHOOL's, except that younger students are in classes and activities Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday through 3:00 p.m. and Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Sports meet from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Dormitory check-in Sunday through Friday is 8:00 p.m., with lights out at 11:00 p.m.

"A great thing about Summer School is trying new sports. The more advanced players and coaches help you learn. In Saudi Arabia, the main sport is soccer. The first day when we were signing up for activities, I was going to sign up for soccer, but we were encouraged to try something new. I took tennis instead of soccer, and I'm glad I did." - Moneef
